[PATCH] Add auditd listener and remote audit protocol

The goal of this patch is to add the server side of the remote logging
feature. To this end, a new auditd-listener.c is added which listens
on a TCP port for connections from other systems' audisp-remote
plugins. A new (private) protocol is added which prepends each
message with a header, giving length, status, version, and sequence
information. Each message begets a reply from the server, so we can
pass along status like "disk full" or "ok". Currently, these call a
set of stub functions, as the details of performing appropriate
actions from the plugin are yet to be decided.
The remote plugin has a new option "format" for "ascii" or "managed"
to choose between the old protocol (ascii strings) and the new one
(the header with ACK, default).
The listener will accept either format. It has new options for the
listen port, accept queue size, and acceptable client-side ports.

[PATCH] Handle timestamp 0.0 in auparse, was Re: audit-viewer help needed

Hello,
the attached patch modifies auparse not to handle timestamp 0.x
specially by using out-of-band information (parse_state == EVENT_EMPTY)
instead of assuming (au->le.e.sec == 0) has a special meaning. As far
as I can see, this the two conditions are equivalent if no event has a
timestamp 0.x.
The patch also decreases the assumed minimal length of a timestamp.
I have tested this only minimally - I have checked that (make check)
succeeds, and that audit-viewer doesn't crash on startup.
This patch fixes handling of the following Lenny's audit record:

[PATCH] Add error-handling actions to audisp-remote

The goal of this patch is to robustify the error handling in the
client end of the remote protocol. The following changes are made
by this patch:
* Failure to send a record to the aggregator results in a series of
retry attempts, tunable by the administrator.
* Overall network failure (after retries) and server-indicated error
conditions now have admin-specified actions associated with them.
* Miscellaneous additional error handling for reads and writes.

If you would indulge my simpler in comparison question of the group. I
am setting up audit
on heavy usage systems. I have setup my auditd.conf to rotate the files
once they get to 70
meg and allow up to 12 rotated files. I created a cron that runs hourly to
look and see if
a ninth rotated file exists and if so run "ausearch -i" outputted to a file
and store the
file, then remove the rotated files. I run the cron to avoid losing data if
there is alot of activity
and rotated files are rolled off. I also have to balance performance with
auditing in this
arrangement.
My question is: is there a better way to do this?

Thanks for the suggestions.
It does appear that the xdm login is auditing just fine, however the
audisp-prelude plugin appears to not send the events to the prelude
server.
I think this is the difference:
When sent by gdm it is this:

If so, what is LOGIN? I guess I can go look at the code and find
out...but I guess that one isn't being grabbed inside the audisp-prelude
handle_event() routine.
If this is the case either the sending code could be made to match (I
guess pam isn't doing it the same way in each) or else the
audisp-prelude could be changed to send this one too?

Using Audit to create a realtime process creation monitor

Hi All,
I'm working on a system that needs a realtime process creation tool
(using C programming), getting the pid ppid and path of the process.
I've been trying to use the audit subsystem to do this, but no matter
which way I tried, so far I hadn't been successful.
I've tried these for task creation:
- auditctl -a entry,always -S fork -S vfork -S clone
This way I can't know the pid of the new process, just the
caller;
- auditctl -a entry,always -S brk -F 'a0=0'
This way works most of the time, but creates duplicated
entries;
- auditctl -a task,always
With this I get _a lot_ of garbage, and it's too CPU
consuming to process the output;
And this for task destruction:
- auditctl -a entry,always -S exit -S exit_group
Works most of the time, but doesn't catch "killall sshd"
(doesn't get the "sshd is dying" part).
Can anybody help me with these?
