[PATCH] fix generic user message

Hello,
If you do:
auditctl -m "New Message"
it fails since the original user message wasn't consolidated in the case
statement range. The attached patch fixes the kernel so the old messages work
again.

OK, after getting some sleep and thinking it over, it would be better
for us to take the hit now and not later when the tests are in LTP. so

audit 0.8.2 released

Hello,
I've just released a new version of the audit daemon. It can be downloaded
from http://people.redhat.com/sgrubb/audit It will also be in rawhide
tomorrow. The Changelog is:
- Update documentation
- Handle user space audit events in more uniform way
- Update all parsers for more robustness with new kernel changes
- Create quiet mode for error messages
- Make rotated logs readonly
This is mostly a bug fix release. It also has parsing updates for ausearch to
match the loginuid -> auid change.

I seem to be building them faster than I can announce them.
When testing socketcall code I observed that auditd was logging its own
actions, which soon descended into insanity as it generated two more log
entries for every one that it read from the socket. I have added code to
auditsc.c to exempt the audit_pid from being audited -- see attached
patch. The rest of it is just getting the skb queueing via kernel dæmon
working properly...

User message text reduction

Hello,
I was repatching the trusted apps and got to looking at the resulting
messages. The attached patch: removes uid - not needed since its always 0,
removes length - who cares, and changes loginuid to auid for consistency.

audit capability checks not audited

Hi,
We're starting to see bug reports of SELinux denials with no audit
messages in FC4/devel due to the fact that the audit capabilities are
checked on the receive side via a direct cap_raised() test on the
effective capability set saved earlier by the netlink_send hook. This
manifests as programs failing in enforcing mode and working in
permissive mode, but no audit messages being generated. I know there
was an earlier rfc/patch by Chris to allow moving the netlink message
checking to the send side via a new callback, which would allow us to
perform a traditional capable() call rather than a direct cap_raised()
test and thus have the usual auditing behavior for SELinux there. Is
that stalled?

All unix kernel audit trails emit binary data.
Mapping to human friendly forms is left to the
analysis applications. Note however that unix
systems are not expected to change at the same
pace that Linux currently achieves. Also note
that the applications, libraries, and kernel are
maintained as a single entity, and kernel changes
that might louse up the applications are
controlled to prevent such issues.

We've hashed the notion of intellegence in audit
daemons before, and the danger that mapping in
real time will fail remains, especially
in today's sophisticated name service environment.
Syscall numbers are something that can be
staticly mapped into strings, at the expense
of increased record size, and as it's a simple
mapping an audit daemon is not going to be
greatly impacted.
An alternative is to record the mapping in the
audit file header. This is bad if you use lots
of small audit files, but can be done in user
space once during collection and used during
interpretation. Unless you're changing system
call number dynamically, in which case I suggest
you go lie down for a bit until you feel better.

User Audit question

Hi,
Currently what is the expected behavior of non-setuid root applications
which utilize the PAM framework? We were doing some testing with newrole
(non-setuid root) which uses PAM for authentication but fails to audit
(unless you are root) authentication records due to lack of audit
capabilities. Newrole succeeds normally without being setuid because
password checking happens via a setuid helper. Is there an idea of such a
helper for the PAM audit framework? Or should newrole be a setuid root
application?
I apologize if this has been covered previously. Also this was using the FC4
T3 kernel and PAM.
