Probable bug in auditd

Hi,
I have found a weird behavior in auditd. File "/abc" does not exist.
audit.rules:
-a always,exit -F arch=b32 -S open -S openat
-a always,exit -F arch=b64 -S open -S openat
A non-root user executes "echo > /abc", it doesn't get logged in audit.log. Same with "echo > /etc/abc"
A non-root user executes "cat /abc", it gets logged in audit.log
Since auditd is monitoring all the open and openat syscalls, ideally both the cases (i.e. read and write) should have be logged.
After I execute "chmod a+w /" then "chmod a-w /", if a non-root user executes "echo > /abc", then it gets logged in audit.log.
This looks like a bug to me. Kindly let me know if it's a bug or an intended feature.
System used to test: Linux 5.4.0-56-generic #62-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

AuditRule Questions

1. In audit rules 2.8.5 (front portion of the rules):

Whereas in audit rules 3.0, the same portion of the same rules looks like:

The ordering of the syscalls differs between the two, as well as the sequential order of the rules themselves. I better understand that the first audit-rule matched 'wins'.- Please help me understand the reason for the change in sequence, but also for the change in the order of the syscalls (i.e. between 2.8.5 and 3.0).
2. I notice there are many rules across the entire set (both 2.8.5 and 3.0) that define their key with "-F key=<name>", and others simply with "-k <name>".- Why are their two methods for KEY naming, and does one have a distinct meaning, or precedence, over the other?- Are their some 'rule' types where '-k' is appropriate, whereas '-F key=" is not, thus they are not truly 100% interchangeable?
- If both methods ARE equivalent throughout ALL of the audit.rules content, would it be reasonable to standardize on one method in v3.0.x of your rules going forward?
3. For a RHEL 7.x (and even 8.x) system where the hardware is x86_64 and there is no reasonable expectation to install or operate 'ANY' 32bit software, is there any value, or system performance penalty, to totally eliminating all 'b32' rules?
4. On the grub/kernel commandline, I can add: 'audit=1' -and- 'audit_backlog_limit=####'. I looked for solutions to address the issue I was having, and found one here: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/19327; I found another somewhat helpful reference here: https://blog.siphos.be/2015/05/audit-buffering-and-rate-limiting; though it doesn't make good recommendations for the kernel parameter sizing (if that is a good thing to do in RHEL 7/RHEL 8).
- Is there good relevance in RHEL 7, or RHEL 8 to adding this option to the grub/kernel commandline?- Is there an upper-limit in setting the number?
- What is the correlation of this grub/kernel item, to the '-b ####' rule in /etc/audit/rules.d/audit.rules? Are they (or should they be treated as) mutually exclusive?
- In the 2nd reference, what process do you suggest for me to determine optimal values for 'kernel.printk_ratelimit' -and - 'kernel.printk_ratelimit_burst', as well as for grub/kernel 'audit_backlog_limit=####' and audit.rules '-b ####'?
- This link also seems relevant to the sysctl param's valuations: https://topic.alibabacloud.com/a/linux-system-log-__ratelimitn-callbacks-... Does values for 'kernel.printk_ratelimit = 1'; -and- 'kernel.printk_ratelimit_burst = 1024' seem reasonable?

Possible typo in 22-ignore-chrony.rules

This snippit in both rules in that file (for both v2.8.5 and v3.0.0) "-F auid=unset -Fuid=chrony" for the second "-F" seems to be missing a space after the "-F". Correct?
IRT to the comment in this rule file, "These rules suppress the time-change event when chrony does time updates"; does that mean IF these two rules were not included or commented-out, that the chrony time updates would 'log' events in the audit log?
How do these rules 'work' to suppress chrony time updates from being logged?

[PATCH ghak90 v11 00/11] audit: implement container identifier

Implement kernel audit container identifier.
This patchset is an eighth based on the proposal document (V4) posted:

The first patch was the last patch from ghak81 that was absorbed into
this patchset since its primary justification is the rest of this
patchset. It abstracts the audit kernel internal api to be able to better
regulate audit operations.
The second patch implements the proc fs write to set the audit container
identifier of a process, emitting an AUDIT_CONTAINER_OP record to
announce the registration of that audit container identifier on that
process. The ID can be read from the same file. This patch requires
userspace support for record acceptance and proper type display. The ID is
stored as an object that includes owner information to check for
descendancy, allow process injection into a container and prevent id reuse
by other orchestrators. The same record type is emitted once all tasks
using that audit container identifier have exited.
The 3rd implements the auxiliary record AUDIT_CONTAINER_ID if an audit
container identifier is associated with an event. This patch requires
userspace support for proper type display.
The 4th adds audit daemon signalling provenance through audit_sig_info2.
The 5th creates a local audit context to be able to bind a standalone
record with a locally created auxiliary record.
The 6th patch adds audit container identifier records to the user
standalone records.
The 7th adds audit container identifier filtering to the exit,
exclude and user lists. This patch adds the AUDIT_CONTID field and
requires auditctl userspace support for the --contid option.
The 8th adds network namespace audit container identifier labelling
based on member tasks' audit container identifier labels which supports
standalone netfilter records that don't have a task context and lists
each container to which that net namespace belongs.
The 9th checks that the target is a descendant for nesting and
refactors to avoid a duplicate of the copied function.
The 10th adds tracking and reporting for container nesting.
This enables kernel filtering and userspace searches of nested audit
container identifiers.
The 11th adds a mechanism to allow a process to be designated as a
container orchestrator/engine in non-init user namespaces.
