[PATCH] Add auditd listener and remote audit protocol

The goal of this patch is to add the server side of the remote logging
feature. To this end, a new auditd-listener.c is added which listens
on a TCP port for connections from other systems' audisp-remote
plugins. A new (private) protocol is added which prepends each
message with a header, giving length, status, version, and sequence
information. Each message begets a reply from the server, so we can
pass along status like "disk full" or "ok". Currently, these call a
set of stub functions, as the details of performing appropriate
actions from the plugin are yet to be decided.
The remote plugin has a new option "format" for "ascii" or "managed"
to choose between the old protocol (ascii strings) and the new one
(the header with ACK, default).
The listener will accept either format. It has new options for the
listen port, accept queue size, and acceptable client-side ports.

[PATCH] Handle timestamp 0.0 in auparse, was Re: audit-viewer help needed

Hello,
the attached patch modifies auparse not to handle timestamp 0.x
specially by using out-of-band information (parse_state == EVENT_EMPTY)
instead of assuming (au->le.e.sec == 0) has a special meaning. As far
as I can see, this the two conditions are equivalent if no event has a
timestamp 0.x.
The patch also decreases the assumed minimal length of a timestamp.
I have tested this only minimally - I have checked that (make check)
succeeds, and that audit-viewer doesn't crash on startup.
This patch fixes handling of the following Lenny's audit record:

[PATCH] Add error-handling actions to audisp-remote

The goal of this patch is to robustify the error handling in the
client end of the remote protocol. The following changes are made
by this patch:
* Failure to send a record to the aggregator results in a series of
retry attempts, tunable by the administrator.
* Overall network failure (after retries) and server-indicated error
conditions now have admin-specified actions associated with them.
* Miscellaneous additional error handling for reads and writes.

Performance of libauparse

I have been investigating using libauparse in my austream replacement
audit daemon to do some inline data enhancement[1]. austream is
essentially a very thin wrapper which pulls audit records out of the
kernel, wraps them in a UDP syslog packet and sends them to the network.
It is very simple and very fast.
To measure the overhead of libauparse on austream I initialised auparse
as AUSOURCE_FEED, fed each received record into it, and spat them out
unmodified on receiving the AUPARSE_CB_EVENT_READY event. This added
more than an order of magnitude to the time austream spends in
userspace. A brief look at this overhead shows that about 40% is spent
in malloc()/free(), and 25% is spent in strlen, strdup, memcpy, memmove
and friends. I suspect that very substantial gains could be made in the
performance of libauparse by reworking the way it uses memory, and
passing the length of strings around with the strings. Unfortunately, I
suspect this would amount to a substantial rewrite.
Is this something anybody else is interested in? I guess performance
isn't so important if you're just scanning log files in non-real time.

audit-viewer serial number?

How can I specify the serial number as one of the audit-viewer columns?
I know how to add columns, but I think since the SN is not named it may
not be in the available columns list. That or I missed it.
I can see the SN if I double-click on the event, as part of the ID in
the top of the "Event Details" window, however I'd like to be able to
see the numbers in a column.

Can someone give me an example of how to audit the "date" command in the
audit.rules file. I would like for it to report only failures for a
user using the command. Root using the command would report nothing. I
can get this working for file watches but not for executables using:
-a exit,always -w /etc/shadow -S open -F success!=1

build 32 on 64

I guess with the latest audit code there is no easy way to build the
32-bit variants on a 64-bit machine?
The compiles work fine, however the python checking code in pycheck will
not work because the installed python is 64-bit whereas the .so it
accesses (auparse.so; built) is 32-bit.
The build logs on koji look as if it is compiling natively in both
instances.
