New to audit. Need help configuring audit to meet NISPOM req's

Hello All, I'm a linux administrator and computer security rep with a small NIS domain all running RHEL 4.4 ES on x86 platforms. I'm looking for any help, scripts, or just copies of configuration files so that I can learn from your examples while studying the man pages. Here are the list of items that I need to accomplish and I greatly appreciate any help that you can provide. 1) I need to configure a test box to meet NISPOM audit requirements. (any examples of /etc/auditd.conf and /etc/audit.rules would be great) 2) Then test it by acting as a user and trying to access files such as /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. 3) Then report that data to prove to auditors that the tool is collecting the events. RHEL and Object reuse requirements.

Hello, From reading the Redhat Enterprise Linux security target for CAPP document I can see that the common criteria evaluation identified these object reuse requirements (OR.1, OR.2, and OR.3) and that Redhat met these requirements. And these requirements were met in, Section 6.2.5.1, which states that file system objects are created with no contents. The exceptions are listed right above that line. Section 6.2.5.2 says that IPC objects are initialized with 0 at creation and do not change size. Section 6.2.5.3 discusses about memory objects. Can anybody help me out to identify where in the Linux source code these requirements are met. Thanks, -- Sarmila

Audit rules use of flags.

Hello all: I have a requirement to audit/log all failed attempts to access files. I entered the following line in audit.rules: -w exit,always -S open -F success!=0 and audit flags all file exits regardless of success. When I try: -w exit,possible -S open -F success!=0 it does NOT flag any file openings, including failure. I am curious if: -w exit,never -S open -F success=0 but I suspect that the 'first hit takes it' nature of audit-1.0.12 will make the flag at the end useless. So I suppose the question is - do I need to put the -F flag before the -w portion of the entry, or is there some other way to meet the requirement? Thank you all for any insight.

A scriptable utility for setting auid

I needed a way to exclude a very large class of audit traffic [1] in RHEL 4. It occurred to me that if I could launch a process and give it the auid of a dedicated user, I could easily filter it out along with all child processes. With this in mind I wrote the attached simple wrapper round the audit_setloginuid. It sets its own auid to whatever you give it, then execs a command. I'm assuming that this would be better achieved in RHEL 5 using selinux context filtering. However, I hope to use this tool to achieve useful auditing on an Oracle RAC node on RHEL 4. Matt [1] It turns out that Oracle CSSD, which maintains cluster membership, is a somewhat retarded shell script. audit 1.4.1 released

Hi, I've just released a new version of the audit daemon. It can be downloaded from http://people.redhat.com/sgrubb/audit It will also be in rawhide tomorrow. The Changelog is: - updated audit_rule_fieldpair_data to handle perm correctly (#226780) - Finished search options for audit parsing library - Fix ausearch -se to work correctly - Fix auditd init script for /usr on netdev (#228528) - Parse avc seperms better when there are more than one This adds the code behind the search API of the audit parsing library. The regex code is not done at this point. The other known problem with the API right now is that it does not account for out of order records.
