[PATCH v2] audit: add fields to exclude filter by reusing user filter

RFE: add additional fields for use in audit filter exclude rules https://github.com/linux-audit/audit-kernel/issues/5 Re-factor and combine audit_filter_type() with audit_filter_user() to use audit_filter_user_rules() to enable the exclude filter to additionally filter on PID, UID, GID, AUID, LOGINUID_SET, SUBJ_*. The process of combining the similar audit_filter_user() and audit_filter_type() functions, required inverting the meaning and including the ALWAYS action of the latter. Keep the check to quit early if the list is empty. [PATCH 17/21] audit: Use timespec64 to represent audit timestamps

struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Audit timestamps are recorded in string format into an audit buffer for a given context. These mark the entry timestamps for the syscalls. Use y2038 safe struct timespec64 to represent the times. The log strings can handle this transition as strings can hold upto 1024 characters. Audit reporting Invalid argument

Hello, I am trying to monitor multiple files using Linux audit. In order to get better performance, I am trying to reduce number of rules. If I specify more than one path field as in below example I am getting "Invalid argument". Examle1: # auditctl -a always,exit -F arch=x86_64 -F path=/home/secpack/test.c -F path=/home/secpack/test -S open Error sending add rule data request (Invalid argument) # auditctl -a always,exit -F arch=x86_64 -F path=/home/secpack/test.c -F dir=/tmp/ -S open Error sending add rule data request (Invalid argument) However, I am able to create a single rule to monitor multiple PIDs or UIDs as below. Examle2: # auditctl -a always,exit -F arch=x86_64 -F pid=3526 -F pid=3537 # auditctl -a always,exit -F arch=x86_64 -F auid=0 -F auid=512 -F auid=1002 As per the auditctl man page, Build a rule field takes up to 64 fields on a single command line. Each one must start with -F. Each field equation is anded with each other to trigger an audit record. My question is, 1. specify more than one path field as in example1 is valid? 2. If not valid than how do I create single audit rule to monitor multiple files/directory? 3. If valid, then why "Invalid argument" is reported? 4. To monitor 10 files, should 10 audit rules required? 5. if 10 rules are required, how to I optimize the rule for performance? My next question is does Linux audit support regular expressions? How do I create audit rule to monitor /var/log/*.log? # auditctl -a always,exit -F arch=x86_64 -F path=^/var/log/*.log$ -S open Error sending add rule data request (Invalid argument) If my questions are already documented, please guide me to the documentation. problems with slow auditing/journaling after updating to RHEL 6.8

I guess the first question I should ask is : is this the proper list for questions about problems? If not, then please accept my apology -- and I would greatly appreciate if you could direct me to the proper list. I recently upgraded a system to RHEL 6.8. kernel: 2.6.32-642.1.1.el6.x86_64 audit: audit-2.4.5-3.el6.x86_64 My users and I immediately noticed a huge drop in application performance -- and when I investigated further, I found a large amount of CPU wait. Here's a graph from nagios data via splunk, over the past 48 hours. The system was patched ~1300 (right about the middle of each graph -- the first spike), then rebooted at 1715 (the second spike): http://i.imgur.com/BuyazLH.jpg Here's some nmon snapshot during a "problem" period: http://i.imgur.com/YbQjeK2.jpg (note: all logical volumes on sda5, dm-9 is the logical volume for audit logs) If I'm interpreting things correctly, it is due to drastic slow-down of journaling on my audit volume. I don't know if this is a problem with the auditing subsystem, or the disk I/O subsystem, or ... what? Here's an excerpt from iotop, while I run a process that generates perhaps 1000 audit log messages: Total DISK READ : 0.00 B/s | Total DISK WRITE : 160.53 K/s Actual DISK READ: 0.00 B/s | Actual DISK WRITE: 586.11 K/s PID PRIO USER DISK READ DISK WRITE SWAPIN IO> COMMAND 1458 be/3 root 0.00 B/s 0.00 B/s 0.00 % 97.23 % [jbd2/dm-9-8] 24354 be/3 root 0.00 B/s 145.59 K/s 0.00 % 0.54 % auditd The total amount of data generated in the logs is actually very small -- approximately 1 MB -- so I'm puzzled as to why it would take so long to write it out. The process that generates most of these audit messages takes 1.1 second to run with auditing off (or on a RHEL 6.7 system with auditing on or off). The filesystem is ext4. Disks are all local SATA disks.
