Hi,
I've just released a new version of the audit daemon. It can be downloaded
from http://people.redhat.com/sgrubb/audit It will also be in rawhide
soon. The Changelog is:
- Disable libev asserts unless --with-debug passed to configure
- Handle kernel 2.6.29's audit = 0 boot parameter better
- Install audit.py file in arch specific python directory (Dan Walsh)
- Fix problem with negative uids in audit rules on 32 bit systems
- When file type is unknown, output octal for mode field (Miloslav Trmač)
- Update tty keystroke interpretations (Miloslav Trmač)
The first item reduces the size of the audit daemon. libev seems to be working
pretty good so no need to keep its debug info anymore. The second item
addresses a problem when the kernel is booted without the audit subsystem
compiled in, but yet they try to run the audit daemon. The failure was that it
hung the initscripts since the problem was prefork.
Dan Walsh also found that the python libs were landing in the wrong place
after 1.7.12's fix for the newest swig. Also, 32 bit system were having
problems with auid=-1 not being the right value. And we updated some of the
tty keystroke mappings to be more user friendly.

[PATCH 0/2] security/smack implement logging V3

Hello,
the following 2 patches implements auditing of security events for Smack.
patch 1 : created common LSM auditing code
patch 2 : convert smack to use it
Changes since V2 :
- don't make Smack depend on AUDIT
I tried to make it zero overhead in the !CONFIG_AUDIT case,
without making the code too ugly (??). I hope i didn't mess it too much
- makes everything a key=value pair
- various other cleanup suggested by Eric and Casey

moves shareable code to include/linux/lsm_audit.h and security/lsm_audit.c.
Smack specific logging functions are now defined in smack_access.c

[PATCH 1/2] security/smack implement logging V3

This patch creates auditing functions usable by LSM to audit security
events. It provides standard dumping of FS, NET, task etc ... events
(code borrowed from SELinux)
and provides 2 callbacks to define LSM specific auditing, which should be
flexible enough to convert SELinux too.

[PATCH 2/2] security/smack implement logging V3

the following patch, add logging of Smack security decisions.
This is of course very useful to understand what your current smack policy does.
As suggested by Casey, it also now forbids labels with ', " or \
It introduces a '/smack/logging' switch :
0: no logging
1: log denied (default)
2: log accepted
3: log denied&accepted

Hello all,
I have just run into the problem that many of you have: trying to parse
the audit logs.
Yesterday I read through the linux-audit mail archive. Here are the

From these I see these requirements (correct me if I am wrong):
- must be backwards-compatible (doesn't break user-space on FC2, etc)
- kernel does no verifying of incoming user-space strings
- kernel must output strings in a "simple" format (e.g. no XML :-)
- able to write a parser that guarantees all (relevant) input ends up in
output
- use disk space efficiently
- handle UTF-8
Based on things other people have proposed, how does this sound:
- radix prefixes for any non-base10 number (I think audit mostly does
this already?)
- hex-encode strings (and do not quote) if:
-- contains non-ASCII or non-printable characters
- quote strings if:
-- contains whitespace or '=' or '"' (in which case you have to output
something like '\"'
-- entirely {hex,octal,base10} characters
Or we could just save a little more headache at the cost of
space/readability and hex-encode on '=' and '"' too. Looking at
auparse, we may have to hexencode with embedded '"'.
Check if you need to encode first, then check for quoting. Something
like...

Oh, and if anyone has ideas for making shadow-utils play nicer with
audit, I possibly have that kind of time on my hands. Also, getting rid
of the extra punctuation [:(,)] would be great.

Previously we had both; loaded same ruleset everywhere.

Can we make SMACK[smack_inode_getarr] into key=value pairs too and get

also: dev=sda8ino=1237000 I'm guessing that was just a typo of you
putting the example into the e-mail, but you may want to double check.

[PATCH] Don't crash on unknown S_IFMT file modes

ausearch -i and libauparse currently crash (access NULL) if a mode= field contains an unknown file type. Such records are generated by the kernel for IPC, e.g.

The attached patch:
* Modifies ausearch and libauparse to output the file format in octal if it is unknown.
* Modifies libauparse to use the same interpreted field format as ausearch (without a space in the middle).
* Modifies comma handling in libauparse to avoid a strcat() call.
